珍しいことではないけれど…回りくどい説明
たしか英語で書かれていたが、more を打ち消すのは悲観的で、less を打ち消すのは前向きと教えている教材があった。
しかし、悲観的か前向きかは文脈によるというもので、どうせ言うなら I only have ~ がより悲観的の様相がある。余裕を見せるなら I have more than ~ と肯定文だろう。
しばらくして気づいたのだが、more を打ち消せば否定に過ぎないところ、less を打ち消せば当然ながら、肯定になるということを説明しようとしたのかもしれない。
こんなことに気づくのに嫌に時間をかけてしまった。これだけで済むものを、実例らしいものをあげれば分かった気になってくれる人がいるのだとしても、その例示がまた偏見や、遅かれ早かれ通用しなくなるような偏狭な話に感じられた。
何はともあれ、指導側でステレオタイプなど取り上げるべきでない。

peace and quiet: 安らぎ
peace and quiet は、平和と静けさではなく、強調のための類義語の繰り返しと認識されている。
Tranquillity and freedom from disturbance. This phrase's redundancy— quiet here does not mean “lack of sound” but “peacefulness”—gives added emphasis. It often is used in wishes for this condition, as in All I want is a little peace and quiet. [Mid-1800s]
